About
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever known to his friends as the ‘Chessie’ was developed along the Chesapeake Bay to hunt waterfowl under harsh weather and water conditions. Well known for there proficiency in extremely icy waters they often have to break ice, face wind and tide to complete their retrievals. Not to be confused with the Curly-Coated Retriever the Chessie’s coat consists of a short, harsh, wavy outer coat and a dense, fine, wooly undercoat containing an abundance of natural oil that sheds profusely in the spring and requires daily brushing. In body, the Chessie is a strong, well-balanced, powerfully built animal of moderate size. Distinctive features include eyes that are very clear, of yellowish or amber hue. The Chessie is valued for its bright and happy disposition, intelligence, quiet good sense, and affectionate protective nature. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever loves to run and swim and requires supervised exercise.
